Imagine you promise yourself that you’ll study 10 hours straight every day AND say affirmations like “I am a hard working students. I love studying” AND you actually study 10 hours. It’s hard. It’s tiresome. Your inner voice will be like “I don’t want to keep doing this.”

Then what do we do? We ignore it. Because we are in the trying-hard phase. We can’t stop to listen to all the whining when we have goals to achieve, right?

I’ve done this before, and maybe you’ve done this before, too, We push ourselves, push ourselves, then even more, and soon, it feels soooooooooooooo tiresome that you get a burnout. That’s why we need some counterbalancing from time to time.

Good Self-Talk Can Prevent Burnouts

Those productivity goals(I will lose 20 pounds within a month, I will work out every day, I will make seven digit income in 3 years, etc.) are lonely in nature. Think about it. It’s only you who can lose 20 pounds. Your best friend can’t do it for you. It’ll be your money if you make 1 million, so no one else will do it for you. Therefore, we tend to keep things within ourselves when it comes to achieving something.

While that is very natural(what’s wrong with thinking about goals and acting on them?), the problem is that small negative feelings that arise during this process may accumulate and deteriorate if you don’t let them out. It could lead to unnecessary venting on our loved ones. Unreasonable blaming on your daughter. In a long run, maybe depression is a possibility.

That’s why we need to talk things out frequently. Sometimes, a problem that seemed so big turns out to be so simple when you talk to somebody about it That’s the power of communications. I’m sure there’s a very reasonable neurobiological reason behind this phenomenon, which I don’t know. The key is, we need to take things out from time to time.

A tiny little problem here is that our friends and family could be busy. I’m sure they’d be happy to listen to you if you want to talk, but you know the feeling. You can’t talk to them for every tiny detail.

That’s where self-talk comes in. You could talk to yourself. Like, you could be a mom for yourself. When a kid gets sick, her mom will take care of her. When she fails a JV valley ball tryout, her mom will listen to her and tell her it’s gonna be ok. You should be that mom, for yourself. It’s very effective, and feels god. Honestly, who can understand you better than yourself?

This affirmation–that you have all the answers within yourself–is one way of self-talk. It’s the warm, comforting, and assuring words that a hard-working version of yourself need to hear.

How This Affirmation Works

This affirmation is applicable pretty much anywhere. Whether you were on the verge of starting binge eating after 6 week diet program or your rival takes away the coveted Paris job at work(despite all your hard work!), you really do have all the answers within yourself. You know that it’s not the time to binge eat. You know it’s his achievement, not your failure. You knew all along.

Also, this affirmation builds the roots of confidence.

When we try to achieve something, the goal seems very far. When it doesn’t seem to come true soon enough, we try to analyze if there’s anything done wrong. Often the blame lays on oneself. Because I’m trying to get better, I try to find fault in my wrongdoing. It holds some truth, but at the same time, it is just too harsh and takes our confidence away. It’s like, “if I am the problem, I may be the failure itself.”

But that is never true. We make mistakes, but that doesn’t mean we are the mistakes. I hope this affirmation will work for you. And I think it’s true. We do have all the answers within ourselves.
